A Special Message from ExoticSpotter

Jul 13, 2012

ExoticSpotter.com has been neglected for a long time. Yet despite this, an awesome community has grown. We're proud to have passionate spotters like yourself who share a deep love of exotic cars, and it's time that we give you guys the site that you deserve.

Over the next few months, you will be seeing many improvements. We plan to release a new design that will display photos in larger sizes with better usability. We're also working on several new features, including improved profile pages, better social features, comment alerts, discussion forums, improved point system, this blog, and much more.

We're also in the process of implementing a new moderation system which will seperate "true" spottings from those that don't qualify. Many of you have questions as to what constitutes a true spotting, so here is our official stance:

True Spottings:
  • Photo must be taken on public roads, highways, or parking spots, and
  • Photographer must have no prior knowledge that the vehicle would be in that location.
Not True Spottings:
  • Photos from Car Shows (including parking lot of car shows)
  • Photos from Car Club Meetings
  • Photos from the start or end of a Car Rally (Gumball 3000)
  • Photos at or near an Exotic Car Dealership
  • Photos taken in private garage or shop
  • Photos of friend's or neighbor's cars
  • Photos from a photo shoot
  • Photos taken in known locations where exotics are always parked (certain hotels, in front of certain stores, etc)
NOTE: If a photo looks suspicious, you need to provide a detailed description of how you spotted the car. If you provide no details, the photo will not qualify as a true spotting.
The Following May Qualify as True Spottings:
  • Spotting an exotic car while it's taking part in a Rally, (if you didn't know about the Rally)
  • Spotting an exotic car on the streets near a car show (not directly outside the show)

Here's a simple way to look at it: Exotic spotting is like wild bird spotting. If you take a photo of a bird at the zoo, that is not a real spotting. (that's like taking a photo at a car show).

A true exotic spotting is one where you have no idea if an exotic car will be there. Photos of exotic cars parked in front of certain hotels don't count as real spottings, because there's a reasonable expectation that they will be there.

This being said, it doesn't mean we won't feature photos that are not true spottings. Any photo of an exotic car on public roads will qualify to be on the site, but true spottings will receive higher points and awards.

In order to implement this new moderation system, we will need volunteers to go through the archives and mark photos accordingly. These volunteers will also moderate new photos, to make sure only the best ones are "featured". We will be providing admin tools to make tasks easier.

If you're interested in volunteering as a moderator, please email us. We'd also like to hear your ideas for new features or changes you'd like to see to the site. Thank you to everyone who has contributed so far, we look forward to taking the site to the next level. Please leave your comments below.

I definately agree with umberto on that idea. In fact i think that would probably be one of my favorite ideas i've seen yet. I know there are pictures i've been waiting to post still just for the reason of not wanting them in the other other category and hoping the categories are made but that would be insanely awesome having an other/unknown/vintage in each category instead of one compiled one. we could still have that category for certain cars though that dont have a category but i really would love to see that recommendation come into play.

umberto - thanks for the link to list of models from UltimateCarPage, that's actually very helpful. We realize we need to expand the list of vehicles, and we also want to include all the tuners as well.

I've think one thing: example I spot a Maserati Ghibli, instead I put under Other Other, you can do a section: brand of the car-other: so it would Maserati other/unknow/vintage/hand built. I do not know if I explained it well...

Rivibird:

1) Bijan's Bugatti Veyron is not a true spotting according to a list of rules we have listed in the post. Because of "Photos taken in known locations where exotics are always parked (certain hotels, in front of certain stores, etc)"

2) Search the site for 'Dorchester', for example.

3) I don't think it would be possible to live without moderation. It would be great to avoid it, because it always take time and efforts to moderate, but..

4) Thanks for the technical problems report. We will be looking into it very soon.

5) We will update makes/models list, yes.

6) Yes, we are going to deal with fake/temporary accounts.

Ferrari F4 0: thanks for suggestion, we will think about it.

I think that you should have a whole section for classic cars, not every make and model but just "Classic Cars" that way when ever we post one we just say the car in the description.

I am glad about the new updates. But I have several questions concerning the new site:

First, is Bijan's Bugatti Veyron that is parked in front of Bijan every day a true spotting? Because that is the most spotted car on the site, and I am getting kind of sick of it appearing on the front page. We have enough photos of it.

Also, why is there a hotel rule? I don't know of any hotel that has that many exotics in it...

And also about the forums: Is there going to be some moderation in the forums as well?

I know everybody is asking about the comment alerts thing, but it is saying that I have 1 new comment alert on an image you guys recently deleted, and now it is stuck there. (It was the Dodge Neon that had a Viper engine in it, so I put it under "Dodge Viper")

Are you guys also going to update the categories for classic supercars, such as Maserati, because I could name about a billion more Maseratis there are in the world than the Quattroportes, GranSports, 3200 GT, etc.

I also wanted to mention some technical glitches with this site as well. A minor glitch is when you click "Add as Friend" to somebody who you are already friends with. It reads: "You are alredy friends" The second "a" is missing in the word "already". But a major glitch is where you go to the "Ford" category, and then click "Mustang Shelby GT500". It is supposed to give you a compilation of Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 images, but instead it goes to some random spotting of a Bentley Continental that was spotted in Montreal, Canada on 1/11/05 by a user named ruggels, an auto-generated account.

Speaking of auto-generated accounts, would you remove the auto-generated accounts, but keep the spots up, because honestly, I just think it is spamming up the "Find a User" page, and they are all abandoned never to be used again.

Sorry, I just have a lot of questions concerning the new site, and I want to know what it is going to be like.

Umberto. Updates mentioned in the post are not about breaking everything we got and throw it away. It's all about _adding_ new features to make this site better for it's users. We are going to add them step by step, and of course there is no plans to remove images.

I do have a recommendation though. Could we get a clear all button for the comments reminders because when i go on the all recent comments and see the reply and even click on the picture it doesnt take it off my comments tab untill i click it from that reminder. And i'm slightly OCD when it comes to having reminders i havent seen so i always have to keep clicking that tab and getting it to 0.
