I was part of BMW's i8 Media event (I actually made that clear in the forum) where eight pre-production i8s were handed to various members of the media were handed the keys as well as suggested routes with dual meeting points. However, drivers were free to move about as they pleased. So to answer, the media event location was Los Angeles and Malibu, not any one particular location and yes, the vehicle was still randomly spotted. I made sure not to post any of our meeting spot locations to ensure that spots were just that, spots. I hope that clarifies.
