The vast majority of 288s, F40s, F50s, and Enzos were red. They were considered race cars for the road and were the first road cars I believe to have scuderia shields, so makes sense for them to be in the official color. Considering the non-red F50s in the US, you could have the wrecked black one, the painted silver one, or one of the yellow F50's with mismatched headlights as an alternative. All things considered, red ain't so bad! :)
