Probably because they're driving an automatic, would rather talk/text their friends than actually shut up and drive, and view driving as a chore.

Yeah, that's probably very true. That's why manual is safer, because its harder to text and shift gears at the same time. So basically, if this [insert offensive name of choice] Dart driver had bought a manual, this crash wouldn't have happened.
