How do you do a panning shot on a DSLR? I tried once and my timing was a little off and the car was blurry.
Use the shutter priority setting and set it to approximately the speed of the car (60 mph, set to 1/60, and so on). That's the generally accepted method, although if you're just learning then you may want to speed up the shutter until you get the hang of it. Then just track the car, keeping it in the same position in the frame, and when it gets to the spot where you want to shoot, pull the trigger and keep following it through the end of the shot. It's trial and error, just go out there and shoot and with practice you'll get results.

I find it easiest to follow the car from the start and then shoot in continous mode so you get 3-6 photos and usually at least one of them is good.
