I just had my furnace checked out, and it’s got some issues. It's still running for now, but the technician said it might not make it through the winter without some repairs (it routinely drops below 0°F here in North Vancouver, BC).

The furnace is 19 years old and has several problems:

- The blower motor is leaking oil and over amping, which cuts down on reliability.
- The capacitor is out of range, making the blower motor's situation worse.
- The blower wheel has a thick layer of dust, reducing airflow.
- The flame sensor reading is low, and the temperature split is 5 degrees higher than it should be.
- The furnace has a lot of severe temperature stress throughout, which is very concerning.

This is my first full winter in the house, so I’m not sure how new some of these issues are. The technician said at the very least, I need a new flame sensor and voltage absorption system, which would cost $525. The blower motor is also in bad shape, but it's probably not worth replacing.

Should I spend a few hundred bucks to try and get another year out of this furnace? Or should I just cross my fingers and hope it lasts until spring? Or maybe I should start getting quotes for a new furnace and replace it ASAP? If you have any recommendations for furnace companies in or around North Vancouver, BC, please let me know.

I totally get your dilemma. Being from East Vancouver, I know how brutal our winters can get. With temperatures often dropping below 0 degrees, relying on a failing furnace is a risky move, especially when you're dealing with issues like an over-amping blower motor, out-of-range capacitor, low flame sensor readings, and severe temperature stress.

Given that your furnace is 19 years old, it's likely nearing the end of its lifespan. Investing $525 in repairs might not be the best option, considering the blower motor's poor condition and the overall stress the furnace is under.

Instead of hoping it makes it through the winter, I'd recommend looking into a replacement. It might seem like a big upfront cost, but a new, efficient furnace will save you money on energy bills and provide peace of mind.

For reliable and professional service, I'd recommend contacting Vancouver Furnace Repair. They have a great reputation for quality work and excellent customer service.
