I think it was a 2012 model, although I'm not positive; it wasn't the new one, I can assure you that. Everything in it felt brittle (apologies if anyone on here drives a 2012 Corolla). The steering felt dead, the transmission felt archaic, and overall it seemed like a tired, worn out car even though it was brand new when I first drove it. It probably wasn't helped out that I had just stepped out of a brand new 2012 Ford Focus Hatchback, which felt worlds apart. Granted it had the six speed automatic, which has been almost unanimously panned by reviewers, but it still had a great handle on the body roll, very precise and well-weighted steering, and a much more upscale feel to it.
I haven't driven a new Corolla yet, but from what I hear it's still a boring car. I've heard it handles a little better than the one I drove, but unless you get either a base model or loaded "S" model (whatever that's supposed to mean) with a manual transmission, you're stuck with a CVT, which is a deal breaker for me. The Focus, Mazda3, and VW Golf are literally in a different league when it comes to driving characteristics and the like.
How was your "joy ride"? The Corolla is supposed to be "more fun to drive" this time around, but I take that with a grain of salt. Toyota just wants to seem sporty to make up for all the other things wrong with some of their cars.
Haha West you can bet I'll do it eventually. I've taken a defensive driving class before, which allowed me to explore the limits of boring cars like the Sonata, Corolla, and Versa, but I'm sure a GT3 or something similar would crank it up to 11 lol.
They said their (now gone) 911 Turbo would be the car for true racers who actually get out on the track often and do autocross. Other than that, even car they have is an automatic. They just got a 991 GT3, and it has the PDK.
Interesting, I'm surprised they'd have a manual car there when so few people know how to drive them (at least on a racetrack). One of these days I'll have to go to one of the exotic driving courses and drive some of these cars, but I highly doubt they'll have any manuals left by then.
I never actually drove it, I just heard about the failure while I was there. Their car was a true manual, since it was 2007 pre-facelift. The PDK came out when the car was lightly facelifted in 2009.
Lamborrari - Which transmission did the 911 have? True manual or PDK? (I'm guessing PDK). You can blow up a clutch very quickly if you don't know how to drive a manual very well, but the clutches on PDK's (and other dual clutch units) can sometimes only last about 10,000 miles or so.
Modern transmissions are a must. Not only for track duty, but for those who may not be so proficient with using them. Their operations costs must be enormous.
Yeah that's usually when I drive with them. I checked their Website, and the F430 and 911 Turbo are out the door. One time I went and the 911's clutch had failed multiple times in one day, so I think they might have just thought it would be too much to handle, even with the extra cash flow that keeps coming in.
With most of the competition gone now, they have the market cornered. Since you drove with them in the past you should always get that 30 per cent discount.
I might, but the price will have to go down. As much as the cars are nice, anything over $200 seems too expensive to me. The McLaren cost $195 when I drove it, but I only did that because it was a deal exclusive to Blackhawk customers. The typical price for it is around $275. Although you're right, the Huracan does tempt me...
Atlanta slots are selling out fast. I may even try their new track at the Corvette National museum. I have yet to see a cool car in the spectator parking lot.
I know once the nice weather comes back I'm sure you will change your mind on taking out that Huracan lol.
They sometimes attract great cars in their spectator lots too. Recently at NOLA they had a CGT/959 combo in the lot, and they actually had a Dino 246 one year in Atlanta! When I was at Blackhawk last September, there was a blue Viper and an Audi S8 W12 spectating at the track. Have you seen anything spectating while you were there?
And yeah, they probably were able to get all those from the increased prices they are charging on their cars. The Huracan costs about $300-$350, and they had an Autobahn Country Club-exclusive drive of the Aventador in which they charged $500 a pop. I'm not signed up yet, and I don't know if I'll do it this year. The Huracan looks fun but it seems a bit too expensive right now. And I bet they'll charge around $250 for the Z06, which seems too much for a 'Vette.
