I agree that the Maybach was too similar in appearance to the S-Class. If I spent that kind of money on a car I would want it to be known that it is a special machine. The 62 definitely has some presence due to sheer size but the 57 looks like an S-Class... Especially the dash. Take the Maybach logo off and put a Mercedes on it and 99% of people couldnt tell the difference
Kenny, of course the Maybach is on a different level. I would hope so considering the prices. I didn't say it's completely identical though. The materials on offer will of course be of a much higher quality, but it did share few things with the S-Class at that time. Rolls Royce pretty much designed the Phantom from the ground up. Maybe they've shared a few things from BMW, but you don't think of a 7-Series when you look at any part in the interior of the Phantom, do you? Whereas with the Maybach that's different.
There was a really good article I read a few weeks ago, if I find it again I will link it to you. It goes into some more depth and details.
They could have done something more interesting with the whole car tbh, and maybe they wouldn't have had to shut down the whole Maybach project. It looked too similar to the S-Class at that time (just look at the grille and the headlights) and shared too many parts with it, especially in the interior.
For something which was apparently meant to be the ultimate luxury limousine, it didn't have the presence and impact it should have, which is why the Phantom was so successful, amongst too many other reasons.
